Changing Wipers Can Cost More Than You Think

Changing Wipers Can Cost More Than You Think

There are some jobs on a car that are best left to someone who knows what they're doing.

Brakes. Timing belts. Anything involving a warning light you don't recognise.

Then there are windscreen wipers.

Replacing them is a relatively simple job, but it's one that plenty of people still leave to a garage. And once you start looking at the cost of genuine replacement blades, it's easy to see how a job that should take a few minutes can become a surprisingly expensive one.

The blades aren’t always cheap

The first surprise is that genuine replacement wipers can cost considerably more than the €20-or-so you might have in your head when you think about a pair of wipers.

Tesla's UK shop, for example, currently lists a Model 3 wiper blade at £31 each. As the listing is for a single blade, replacing both front blades would cost £62, and then there is the delivery on top of that.

In Ireland, Tesla lists its Model Y wiper blades at €27 each, making €54 for the pair, again, not including the delivery

BMW's UK parts shop gives another useful illustration. Its current range of genuine wiper sets range from £47.38, to £71.51, with some sets listed as high as £86.51. These are genuine BMW parts, and the price varies depending on the vehicle and the specific part required.

That's not to say that genuine blades are necessarily the only option, or that they're poor value. There are plenty of aftermarket alternatives available at lower prices.

The point is simply that if you're buying the manufacturer's own replacement parts, the cost can be considerably higher than you might expect.

Then there’s the fitting

Once you've bought the blades, there's another option: get somebody else to fit them. This is where the price can start to look quite different depending on where you go.

Current UK pricing compiled from published garage and retailer prices puts each front wiper replacement at around £19–£45 fitted at an independent garage, compared with £55–£85 at a franchised dealer for a mainstream car. The figures include VAT and were checked in July 2026.

That isn't a universal price list. The actual cost will depend on the vehicle, the parts being used and the business carrying out the work.

But it does show the difference that fitting and the type of supplier can make. And there's a fairly obvious reason for that. When you ask somebody else to replace your wipers, you're not just paying for two pieces of rubber and plastic. You're paying for the parts, the knowledge of which parts you need, somebody's time and the convenience of not having to do the job yourself.

That's perfectly reasonable. The question is whether you actually need all of that for a job this simple.

The difficult bit isn’t fitting them

For most people, fitting the wipers isn't the thing that makes the job awkward.

It's knowing which wipers to buy in the first place. There are different blade lengths, fittings and connector types. The correct wiper depends on the vehicle, and even if two cars look similar, that doesn't necessarily mean they'll use the same blades.

If you get the wrong ones, you're back where you started. That's probably one of the biggest reasons people leave the job to a garage. Let somebody else work out what's needed, fit them and hand the car back.

The actual replacement can take minutes. The uncertainty beforehand is what makes it feel like more of a job.

Doing it yourself doesn’t have to mean guessing

Once you know exactly which wipers you need, the job becomes considerably less intimidating.

A registration-based lookup removes much of the uncertainty. Enter the registration, identify the vehicle, and the correct wiper set can be matched to it.

That's a very different proposition from standing in a auto-parts store staring at a wall of wiper blades trying to work out whether the number on the packet means anything to you. And once the right blades are in your hands, fitting them is usually a matter of releasing the old connector and attaching the new one.

It isn't a complicated mechanical repair. You don't need a workshop, specialist tools or an afternoon set aside for it. You just need the right blades.

Enter your registration, we'll find the right fit, send them to your door and show you how to fit them.

You can even make the tea while you're waiting.

Visibility, Sorted.
